FINDLAY, Ohio (WTVG) – The Findlay Police Department held a news conference Thursday to release new details and body camera footage of the Findlay shooting in which a police officer shot and killed a teenager.
The Lucas County Coroner’s Office identified the teen who died as 17-year-old Kalvin Darapheth.
Findlay Police said officers were dispatched to Bernard Park around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 for a report of three juveniles drinking alcoholic beverages. Police said the kids were a 13-year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl, and a 17-year-old boy.
Police said when officers arrived on the scene, Darapheth ran away and an officer began to chase him. During the chase, Darapheth fired two shots toward the officers, and one of the officers returned fire.
During the news conference, police revealed the officer who shot the teen is a four year veteran of the department. He fired his weapon eight times. The other responding officer was a 10 year veteran who did not fire their weapon.
The autopsy determined Darapheth died of multiple gunshot wounds.
“This was a dangerous and tragic situation … my thoughts and prayers go out to all that was a part of this critical incident and as a department and also for the loss of the life,” Findlay Police Chief James Mathias said, adding that he stands behind his officers. “We’ll have to wait till the outcome BCI’s criminal investigation — but from everything that we have so far, our officers acted within the scope of their duties and performance.”
Two officers are off on traumatic incident leave, which is standard protocol. Authorities said the two officers involved had not previously had any traumatic incidents, and the last time the department had a police shooting was ten years ago.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
