Chapter 1: The Sterile Trap
He was standing in the examination room with his expensive espresso, acting as if nothing in the world could disturb his perfect, arrogant calm.
I had not slept in four days.
David Vance didn’t know that. Then again, there were countless things he no longer knew about me. Knowing someone required attention, and my husband had stopped giving me that long before I realized exactly whose bed his attention had wandered into.
The appointment at the Oakwood Women’s Clinic was supposed to be simple. Quick. A solitary, clinical confirmation of the life growing inside me—a life I had discovered on a plastic stick in our master bathroom just seventy-two hours after David had packed a designer suitcase and walked out our front door.
I had sat on the edge of the bathtub, staring at the two pink lines, while the echo of his parting words still rang in my ears: I need truth, Lauren. I need authenticity. And I can’t find it with you anymore.
Authenticity. The word tasted like ash in my mouth.
I sat on the edge of the examination table now, wearing a thin, crinkling paper gown that left my shoulders shivering in the over-air-conditioned room. I stared at the man I had loved for seven years. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his hair perfectly styled, checking his gold watch with an air of profound inconvenience.
But David hadn’t insisted on coming today out of a sense of duty. And he certainly hadn’t come alone.
He had walked into the sterile white room followed closely by a shadow drenched in expensive, suffocating jasmine perfume.
Peyton.
She was the woman who had been wearing my husband’s jacket in the photo he had so casually posted online the day after he left. The woman he claimed was his “truth” after accusing me of the most vile, baseless betrayal imaginable to justify his exit. She stood near the sink, tracing the edge of a plastic anatomy model with a perfectly manicured, crimson nail. She wore a silk blouse that cost more than my first car, and a smile that suggested she was watching a highly entertaining tragedy.
“I still don’t understand why she has to be here,” I said, my voice raspy.
David sighed, a long, patronizing exhale, and took a slow sip of his espresso. “Peyton is my partner, Lauren. We are navigating this… unfortunate situation… together. Transparency is our foundation.”
“Transparency,” I echoed, my hands clenching the edge of the paper gown. “You moved out four days ago.”
“And in those four days, we’ve had to clean up the mess you made,” Peyton chimed in, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. She stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the linoleum.
David didn’t just bring his mistress to my ultrasound appointment. He reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out a sleek, black leather folder.
“Let’s make this quick, Lauren,” David said, his voice completely stripped of the warmth that used to greet me every morning. He tossed the folder onto the small metal tray beside my bed. The heavy thud echoed in the quiet room like a gavel. “I have board meetings at noon.”
I stared at the leather. The gold embossed letters on the front read Vance & Associates Legal. “What is that?”
Peyton stepped forward, her hand coming to rest lightly, possessively, on David’s forearm. She smiled, a sweet, venomous curve of her lips. “It’s the final divorce decree, sweetie. And a comprehensive waiver of marital assets.”
My breath hitched. A cold dread coiled in my gut, freezing the blood in my veins.
“You’re out of your mind,” I whispered, looking up at David.
“Am I?” David laughed, the sound sharp and entirely devoid of humor. “You cheated on me, Lauren. You got pregnant by another man. I’m not paying for your mistakes. I’ve already contacted the bank and frozen our joint accounts. And just so you know, I had a lovely, long chat with the senior partners at your marketing firm this morning.”
My heart stopped. “You did what?”
“They were very interested to hear about your… moral flexibility,” David said, his eyes going dead and flat. “A firm built on family values doesn’t tend to keep adulterers in high-level executive positions. They are reviewing your contract as we speak.”
He had burned my life to the ground. In three days, he had drained our life savings, actively sought to destroy my professional reputation, and now, he stood in a medical facility demanding I sign away the home I had helped build.
Peyton reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a heavy silver pen. She held it out to me, her eyes gleaming with the absolute thrill of the kill.
“Just sign it, Lauren,” Peyton purred. “Keep whatever shred of dignity you have left. The baby you’re carrying is proof enough of your infidelity. Don’t make David drag you through a public, humiliating trial. You can’t afford a lawyer anyway.”
I looked at the pen. I looked at the man who had stood at an altar in front of two hundred people and promised to love me until our dying breath.
Before I could speak, the heavy wooden door handle clicked, slowly turning.
Chapter 2: The Severance
2 months before I told my husband I was pregnant, he had a secret vasectomy. he accused me of cheating, drained our bank accounts, and left me for his mistress. He brought her to my first ultrasound to force me to sign away our house. “Tell me how far along this bastard is,” he sneered at the doctor. His mistress smirked. The doctor stared at the monitor, then looked dead at him. At that moment, I still didn’t know the most devastating shock was waiting for me at the ultrasound.
