Chapter 3: The Gala of Ruin

The Grand Star Charity Gala in the gilded ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was the absolute nexus of East Coast power. Julian Vance descended the grand staircase with Khloe clinging to his arm, draped in custom Dior. He desperately needed the flashing cameras to validate his status, but he was sweating. His briefcase, tightly gripped in his left hand, held his ultimate weapon: the blackmail dossier.

I sat in the most exclusive, elevated VIP alcove of the ballroom, holding a flute of vintage Krug. My presence was a silent sovereign state, isolated from the buzzing sycophants below.

Julian’s eyes swept the room, searching for the elusive CEO of Starlight. Instead, his gaze slammed into me.

His laughter died in his throat. Jealousy and a humiliating sense of betrayal consumed him. He marched toward my alcove, a venomous sneer plastering his face. Khloe scrambled to keep up.

“Well, well. If it isn’t my runaway wife,” Julian’s voice carried in the finely tuned acoustics of the VIP section. “What? Three days on the streets and you already spread your legs for a sugar daddy to get a seat up here?”

Khloe placed a hand over her chest in feigned horror. “Oh my god, Stella… how could you? Julian gave you everything!”

I didn’t flinch. I slowly raised my head, offering a chilling indifference.

“Julian,” I murmured, my voice cutting through the ambient noise like a diamond blade. “Where do you draw the delusion that I have ever needed to rely on anyone?”

“Stop living in a fantasy, Stella!” he barked. “Without my charity, you don’t even possess the qualifications to breathe the air in this building!”

Before I could respond, the auction began. The finale was the legendary Sapphire Empress necklace. When the bidding reached thirty million, Julian, desperate to publicly humiliate me and flex his fabricated wealth, stood up and shouted, “Fifty million dollars!”

He turned, casting a deeply smug glare in my direction.

I lazily lifted my eyelids and casually murmured to Ray. “Five hundred million.”

The entire grand ballroom instantly plunged into a deathly, suffocating silence. Five hundred million was a financial execution.

Julian’s face bloated crimson. He shoved his way to the aisle, pointing a shaking finger at me. “She is out of her mind! She is completely broke! I demand you throw this fraudulent bitch into the street!”

He turned to the organizer, Mr. Huntington, the formidable head of the auction house. “Mr. Huntington! Do your job! Throw her out!”

Mr. Huntington ignored Julian completely. Sweating profusely, he walked swiftly to my alcove, brought his feet together, and bent his waist into a flawless, ninety-degree bow of absolute submission.

“Miss Sterling… please forgive our lack of preparation… Boss.”

Boss.

That single syllable detonated like a thermobaric bomb. Total, paralyzing shock gripped the crowd. Julian’s vicious smile flash-froze. Khloe’s jaw unhinged. The legacy auction house belonged to me.

“Mr. Huntington,” I said smoothly. “Execute the corporate bylaw regarding disruptive dogs. Throw them out.”

Four professional bouncers charged forward. “Wait! Get your hands off me!” Julian roared, thrashing wildly. “I am Julian Vance! I am meeting the CEO of Starlight Capital tonight! I have leverage! You can’t do this!”

“You want to meet the CEO of Starlight Capital?” A sharp, corporate voice echoed. Victoria Hayes stepped out from the shadows of the alcove, standing slightly behind me. She looked down at Julian with profound mockery. “Mr. Vance, do you honestly believe your toxic house of cards is worth a single cent? You only breathe because our Boss,” she gestured respectfully to me, “allowed it.”

Julian froze. His blackmail plan evaporated into smoke. The deity he was planning to extort was the woman he had tried to slaughter.

He and Khloe were physically dragged backward and tossed down the marble steps of the Plaza into the freezing New York downpour.

As Julian lay in the muddy gutter, his psychological architecture collapsing, Khloe didn’t rush to help him. Instead, she stood up, her ruined Dior clinging to her. Her previous panic was gone, replaced by a terrifying, cold calculation. She pulled a heavy, encrypted burner phone from her clutch and dialed a number.

“The asset has been compromised. The wife is the enemy. Initiate Protocol Blackout. Send the cleaners.”

Story Parts

At my 3-month ultrasound, I overheard my husband order the doctor: “Abor it and remove her uterus. Only Khloe will bear my heir!” Just as the lethal syring was about to pierc my skin, I shattered a glass vial, slashed my restraints, and struck the doctor in the throat right as the clinic wall exploded…
