The news of Vance Corporation’s catastrophic implosion swept the globe. The financial syndicates I controlled pulled their debt simultaneously. Julian’s empire was reduced to toxic rubble in under three hours.
I expected Khloe to simply run with whatever cash she could steal. I assumed she was just a gold-digging parasite. I was gravely mistaken.
While Julian was out wandering the city in a catatonic state of defeat, Ray and I personally led a tactical team into the Vance Corporation headquarters to secure Julian’s hidden biometric safe. I wanted the satisfaction of holding his physical assets in my hands.
The executive floor was deserted, bathed in the eerie glow of streetlights. Ray easily bypassed the biometric lock on the wall safe. Inside, alongside stacks of emergency offshore bonds, was a heavily encrypted hard drive.
“Boss, look at this,” Ray frowned, plugging the drive into a decryptor.
As the files loaded on the screen, the air left my lungs. These weren’t corporate secrets. They were highly classified, restricted Level-5 architectural schematics of the Sterling family’s global military installations. It was espionage of the highest order.
“Julian isn’t just a greedy businessman,” I whispered, the blood draining from my face. “He’s an embedded asset. A spy.”
“Drop the drive and step away from the desk!” a voice commanded from the shadows of the corridor.
Dozens of red laser sights instantly painted Ray’s chest. A federal strike team in full tactical gear poured into the office, weapons raised.
From the center of the formation, a man walked forward. He was tall, with deep, piercing eyes and a jawline carved from granite. He wore a dark tactical suit, his presence commanding absolute authority.
My heart stopped completely. The room spun.
It was Sebastian Pierce.
He was the prodigy of the Pierce military dynasty, the man I was supposed to marry before an overseas black-ops mission allegedly claimed his life three years ago. His “death” had left me broken, vulnerable, and the perfect prey for Julian’s calculated charm.
“Sebastian?” my voice cracked, a ghost escaping my lips.
He signaled his men to lower their weapons. He stepped toward me, his eyes carrying a profound, agonizing sorrow. “I’m sorry, Stella. I had to stay dead.”
“What is going on?” I demanded, my icy facade fracturing.
“Julian Vance was recruited by a transnational arms syndicate,” Sebastian explained, his voice heavy. “His rapid rise wasn’t just your money; it was cartel blood money mixing with Starlight’s funds to mask their trail. His mission was to marry you, infiltrate the Sterling family, and steal those schematics. Khloe Montgomery isn’t his mistress. She is his handler.”
The revelation hit me like physical trauma. My entire marriage, the love I thought I had, the child I almost lost—it was all a cold, calculated operation. When I got pregnant, I became a liability to Khloe’s timeline. They needed me dead.
“We let him build his empire so we could track the money back to the syndicate’s core,” Sebastian reached out, his hand hovering near my face but not daring to touch. “I watched you for three years, Stella. Every time he touched you, it killed me. But if I broke cover, the syndicate would have vanished.”
I took a shaky breath, the pieces sliding violently into place. “Khloe called in cleaners tonight. At the Gala.”
Sebastian nodded grimly. “We intercepted the call. But Julian is missing. And he just sent a transmission that changes everything.”
Sebastian handed me a tablet. It was a live video feed. Julian, looking manic and completely unhinged, was standing in a rusted, abandoned warehouse at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Tied to a chair next to him, bruised and weeping, was Martha, the elderly maid who had secretly slipped me extra food and comfort during my three years in Julian’s gilded cage.
“Stella,” Julian hissed into the camera, holding a heavy iron wrench. “I know everything now. I know you’re Starlight. You destroyed me. Come to Pier 44. Alone. If I see a single military chopper, a single federal agent, I will crush her skull. You have one hour.”
Ray stepped forward, furious. “It’s a trap, Boss. Khloe’s cleaners will be there.”
I looked at the screen, staring into the eyes of the man who had turned my life into a war zone. I didn’t feel fear. I felt the absolute, cold clarity of an apex predator.
“Let them come,” I said quietly, handing the tablet back to Sebastian. “Julian thinks he’s a master manipulator. It’s time to show him who actually pulls the strings.”
Chapter 5: The Master of Puppets
At my 3-month ultrasound, I overheard my husband order the doctor: “Abor it and remove her uterus. Only Khloe will bear my heir!” Just as the lethal syring was about to pierc my skin, I shattered a glass vial, slashed my restraints, and struck the doctor in the throat right as the clinic wall exploded…
