A suburban Minneapolis city has agreed to pay $3.2 million to the family of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man who was fatally shot by a police officer who said she confused her gun for her Taser.

The tentative settlement also includes changes in police policies and training involving traffic stops like the one that resulted in Wright’s death, according to a statement Tuesday night from attorneys representing Wright’s family.

Wright was shot once in the chest by Brooklyn Center Officer Kim Potter, who is White, after he was stopped for expired registration tags in April 2021. The former officer was subsequently convicted of first- and second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Potter is heard on video yelling “Taser” several times just before she fires her pistol.

Wright’s family members “hope and believe the measures of change to policing, policies and training will create important improvements to the community in Daunte’s name,” said co-counsel Antonio M. Romanucci. “Nothing can bring him back, but the family hopes his legacy is a positive one and prevents any other family from enduring the type of grief they will live with for the rest of their lives.”

The Associated Press left a message Wednesday seeking comment from the mayor’s office.

The shooting happened at a time of high tension in the area, with former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is White, standing trial just miles away for the killing of George Floyd, who was Black. Floyd’s May 2020 death prompted a reckoning over police brutality and discrimination against people of color.

The fallout from Wright’s death led the Brooklyn Center City Council to pass a series of reforms, including the use of social workers and other trained professionals to respond to medical, mental health and social-needs calls that don’t require police.

The changes also prohibit police from making arrests for low-level offenses and require the city to use unarmed civilians to handle minor traffic violations.

The settlement is one of the largest involving police conduct Minnesota. Last year, the city of Minneapolis agreed to pay $27 million to Floyd’s family.

Minneapolis previously paid $20 million to the family of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, after she called 911 to report a suspected assault behind her home in July 2017 and was fatally shot by Mohamed Noor, one of the officers who responded to her call. Noor is Somali American and Damond was White.

On Monday, March 25th, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received a tip-off from a vigilant citizen regarding a suspected shoplifter at a local Walmart. Deputy Stanford promptly responded to the call, arriving at the scene around 6:26 p.m. The witness reported observing a white female bypassing checkout points with a cart brimming with unpaid items, later identified as Amber McCann, 30, of Sanford, Florida.

McCann’s audacious attempt to abscond with over $1,030 worth of merchandise came to an abrupt halt as deputies discovered stolen goods stashed in her vehicle. However, what began as a routine apprehension quickly escalated when deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. A subsequent search unearthed a cache of narcotics, including methamphetamine and alprazolam, alongside drug paraphernalia and valuable metals.

McCann’s explanations evolved from initially claiming the vehicle was random to revealing it belonged to her boyfriend, further complicating the situation. She now faces a litany of charges, including shoplifting, drug possession, and trafficking of methamphetamine, totaling a staggering $34,000 bond.

The rookie Brooklyn Center Police officer who was training with Kim Potter on the day she fatally shot a black man during a traffic stop said the victim never reached for a gun, nor did he make any threatening gestures toward the officers.

Anthony Luckey made the shocking revelation as he testified on Wednesday as the state’s second witness in the trial of Potter, who is facing charges of first- and second-degree manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Minneapolis in April.

It came one day after jurors were shown never-before-seen dash cam footage of the moment on April 11 when Potter collapsed to the ground screaming ‘I shot him, oh my God’ after she had aimed her gun instead of her Taser at fleeing Wright.

Luckey said he heard Potter yell ‘Taser! Taser! Taser!,’ a warning officers are supposed to give so their partners have time to move away. But almost immediately he saw a flash and smoke and heard the bang of Potter’s gun.

Luckey was so close to Potter when the shot was fired that the casing hit him in the face as it discharged. He said he still had hands on Wright when the bullet hit.

Prosecutors played distressing incident that also showed how Wright sped off in his car shortly after being shot, before coming to a stop when he hits another vehicle down the road.

Luckey’s account ultimately undermined the defense’s attempts to depict Potter’s decision to reach for a weapon as a justifiable move to protect the two officers in the event that Wright attacked or injured them in an effort to flee the scene.

Potter, who resigned from the police force five days after the fatal shooting, claims she mistakenly grabbed her gun instead of a Taser during the traffic stop.
