A collective gasp sucked the oxygen out of the ballroom. The champagne flutes stopped mid-air. Hundreds of eyes widened in utter disbelief, staring at the massive LED screen.
The camera angle was from above, looking down on the metal chair. The image was undeniable.
There was Julian, immaculate in his suit, sitting at the mahogany table, casually placing a piece of O-toro sashimi into his mouth, his jaw working rhythmically.
And there was Margaret, her hands violently clamped over my face, the silver spoon jammed into my mouth, forcing the mound of pure wasabi down my throat.
The audio was pristine. The horrifying, wet, gagging sounds of my suffocation echoed off the crystal chandeliers.
“A wife must learn to swallow her pride,” Margaret’s aristocratic voice boomed through the speakers, dripping with malice.
Julian’s face on the stage drained of all color, transforming into a mask of pure, unadulterated terror. He frantically mashed the button on his remote, his thumb moving in a blur. “Cut the feed! Turn it off! Turn the screen off now!” he bellowed, his polished facade cracking instantly.
He looked frantically toward the AV booth at the back of the room. I could see the silhouette of the technician banging on the glass, locked out by Silas’s override.
The video continued, relentless. On screen, my body convulsed violently in the chair. My face was bright red, tears streaming down my cheeks, as I fought for oxygen against the chemical fire burning my throat and lungs.
“The texture is unparalleled, Mother,” Julian’s recorded voice purred smoothly over the sound of my choking. “Truly exquisite.”
Pandemonium erupted in the ballroom. Mayors, senators, and CEOs recoiled in physical disgust. Women covered their mouths in horror. Men shouted, pointing at the stage. The journalists in the back, realizing the magnitude of what they were witnessing, surged forward, cameras flashing like strobe lights, recording the collapse of the Sterling empire in real-time.
Margaret stumbled back from the podium, her hands shaking, her perfect posture shattering. “This… this is AI! This is a deepfake! A vile smear campaign!” she shrieked into her microphone, her voice shrill and desperate.
But no one believed her. The raw, visceral reality of the footage was too perfect, too hideous to be fake.
The video feed suddenly cut to black, replaced by a glaring, bright white document.
It was the photograph I had taken from the safe. My medical file. The ultrasound report.
Silas had highlighted the text in blinding neon yellow. Patient: Evelyn Sterling. Fetal Sex: Female.
Before the crowd could process it, the slide changed. A second medical file appeared. Patient: Valerie Hayes. Fetal Sex: Male.
The audience instantly connected the dots. The horrific realization washed over the room like a physical wave. They weren’t just torturing me; they were trying to kill my daughter to make way for the mistress’s son.
Shouts of outrage and disgust roared from the crowd.
I looked over at Valerie. She was no longer smirking. Her face was ashen, her eyes wide with panic. She tried to turn and run, to slip out the side doors, but the wealthy socialites surrounding her realized exactly who the woman in the red dress was. They closed ranks, physically blocking her path, their faces twisted in revulsion, trapping her against the wall.
“It’s a lie!” Julian screamed, his voice cracking, his composure entirely gone. He was sweating profusely, looking like a cornered rat. “It’s all fabricated!”
Then, the final slide appeared on the screen.
It wasn’t a document from the safe. It was something Silas had acquired on his own, using his extensive underground connections and a hefty bribe at a private genetics lab.
It was an independent, court-admissible prenatal paternity DNA test for Valerie’s baby.
The results were magnified to fill the entire LED screen.
Probability of Paternity (Julian Sterling): 0.00%
Silence, heavier and more violent than any noise, crashed down on the stage.
Julian stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing silently. He read the numbers. Then he read them again. His eyes snapped from the screen to Valerie, who was now weeping hysterically, shaking her head, surrounded by an angry mob of guests.
Julian had tortured his wife. He had tried to murder his own unborn daughter. He had risked his entire empire, his freedom, his legacy… for a son that wasn’t even his. He had been played by his own mistress.
The shock was too much. The realization broke his mind.
“You…” Julian gasped, dropping his champagne flute. It shattered on the stage. He turned slowly, his eyes wide and manic, staring directly at his mother.
“Julian…” Margaret whispered, backing away from him.
“It was her!” Julian suddenly screamed into the microphone, his voice echoing with desperate, pathetic cowardice. He pointed a trembling finger at Margaret. “She made me do it! She hated Evelyn! She threatened to cut me out of the trust if I didn’t get rid of the girl! I didn’t want to hurt my wife! She forced me!”
The crowd watched, mesmerized by the grotesque spectacle, as the prestigious, untouchable Sterling family devolved into cannibalizing themselves.
Margaret’s face contorted. The mask of the refined, philanthropic matriarch evaporated, replaced by a visage of pure, demonic rage. The son she had spoiled, the son she had committed atrocities for, the son she had protected with her own soul, was tossing her to the wolves to save his own miserable skin.
“You ungrateful, spineless little worm!” Margaret roared, her voice dropping an octave, sounding feral.
She lunged toward the podium. But she didn’t grab the microphone.
Her hand closed around the heavy, silver-plated ceremonial knife that had been resting on a velvet cushion, intended for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
She raised the blade, her eyes burning with homicidal fury, and charged at her own son.
Chapter 7: Ashes and Ice
My husband strapped his pregnant wife to a metal chair while his mother shoved pure wasabi down my throat. When I choked and gagged for air, he sat just feet away, casually eating raw sashimi. They thought no one was watching in that soundproof room, but a forgotten hidden camera in the ventilation shaft had been recording.
