Victoria Harrington stopped moving when she saw the investigators enter the ballroom.
Only minutes earlier, she’d been demanding that Marcus Fletcher remove me from the event. Now, with her company’s financial records displayed across the screens, she was facing questions that no amount of family influence could easily dismiss.
A man in a dark suit approached the head table.
“I’m Special Agent David Ross, FBI Financial Crimes Division,” he announced. “We’re here regarding the investigation into Harrington Capital.”
Victoria immediately turned toward Marcus.
“You arranged this? At a private corporate event?”
Marcus remained calm.
“The relevant authorities were notified after the audit identified serious discrepancies. What happened to Camille tonight is a separate matter that also requires investigation.”
Ross presented the documents authorizing the next steps in the case.
Victoria, Preston, and Sloan were instructed to remain available while the officers addressed the financial allegations and the confrontation witnessed by the guests.
Preston looked terrified.
“Mother, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”
Victoria didn’t answer him.
Instead, she pointed toward the screens.
“Those transactions were legitimate business decisions. Camille is deliberately misrepresenting them!”
I turned to the next page of the audit.
The records showed repeated transfers from pension-related accounts to cover losses on risky investments. The supporting documents included authorization records associated with Victoria and Preston.
“These transactions weren’t isolated accounting mistakes,” I explained. “They followed a pattern over an extended period.”
One of the pension administrators stepped forward.
“How much money is involved?”
“Approximately $320 million in transfers identified by the review.”
The man stared at Victoria.
“Those funds were supposed to protect people’s retirements.”
For the first time, she seemed unable to find an answer.
Preston suddenly began speaking.
“I didn’t understand what I was signing. My mother handled everything. She told me those accounts were available for investment.”
“Preston, stop talking!” Victoria snapped.
But he continued insisting that he’d followed her instructions.
Special Agent Ross directed his team to document Preston’s statements and preserve the records. He also confirmed that investigators would examine each person’s involvement separately.
Sloan tried slipping her phone into her handbag.
An officer approached her.
“Ma’am, we need to preserve any recordings you made of tonight’s incident.”
“I was just taking pictures!” she protested.
“You can explain that during your statement.”
She looked toward her mother for help, but Victoria was occupied with the investigators.
I stood beside Nina, who was still visibly shaken.
A member of the medical team had cleaned the cut on my cheek and covered it with a small dressing. They advised me to have the injury examined further at a hospital.
I intended to follow that advice.
But there was one thing I wanted Victoria to hear before I left.
“Earlier tonight, you offered Preston a thousand dollars to make me cry.”
She looked at me with open hostility.
“You’re still talking about that ridiculous joke?”
“It wasn’t a joke to the person your son attacked.”
Several guests lowered their eyes.
They’d laughed when Preston pushed me into the cake. Now, with investigators standing nearby, none of them seemed eager to defend his behavior.
“You wanted to prove your family could control this company before the acquisition was signed,” I continued. “But the acquisition has been suspended, and your financial records are under investigation.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You think you’ve won because you inherited a company?”
“No. I think the people whose pension money is missing deserve answers.”
I looked toward the investors gathered around the ballroom.
“Fletcher Global will also review its relationships with organizations whose representatives witnessed this assault and chose to encourage it.”
Several executives began speaking quietly among themselves.
Marcus confirmed that the company would conduct those reviews through its compliance and legal departments.
Victoria took another step toward me.
“You’ve ruined everything!”
Marcus positioned himself between us, while security officers moved closer.
“That’s enough, Victoria.”
Special Agent Ross approached with additional documents.
He informed the Harringtons that the investigation had progressed to formal charges involving financial fraud and the alleged misuse of pension funds. Preston would also face scrutiny for his actions against me and Nina.
The officers then escorted the family from the ballroom.
Sloan protested about her phone. Preston repeatedly insisted that his mother had instructed him to sign the disputed documents.
Victoria said nothing as she passed me.
I watched them disappear through the doors.
The ballroom was finally quiet.
Then I turned toward Nina.
She was standing beside the damaged dessert table, looking as though she still expected someone to blame her for intervening.
“Nina,” I said, “you were the only person who stepped forward when I needed help.”
She shook her head.
“I couldn’t just stand there.”
I smiled.
“That’s exactly why I want to speak with you about your future.”

Part 5: After the Harrington Family Lost Everything, I Rewarded the Only Woman Who Stood Up for Me
“I’ll give you $1,000 if you make that little analyst cr:y,” the billionaire’s mother told her son at our company’s gala. Ten minutes later, he gra:b:bed me and pu:shed my face into a massive chocolate cake while his sister recorded everything. When a young waitress tried to protect me, he thre@tened her too. I stood there covered in frosting, refusing to cry. Then our CEO arrived with security—and his first words to me silenced the entire ballroom.
