The silence in the dining room stretched, pulled taut like a wire about to snap.
“She survived,” Marcus whispered, his voice slicing through the heavy air like a razor blade. “My daughter is out of surgery. And my grandson is breathing on his own.”
Julian’s face contorted into a grotesque, uncontrollable mask of shock and despair. It wasn’t relief that his wife and child had survived; it was the horrifying realization that his million-dollar exit strategy had just failed spectacularly. The baby lived. The prenup was ironclad. He was trapped.
“Marcus, please, thank God she’s okay!” Julian babbled, desperately trying to pivot, pulling pathetically at the thick plastic zip-ties biting into his wrists. “I told you, it was an accident! The stairs were slippery! We need to go to the hospital to see her!”
Marcus didn’t argue. He didn’t point out the lies. He simply tapped his smartphone screen, syncing it via Bluetooth to the mansion’s high-end, commercial surround-sound system.
He pressed play on the audio file retrieved from the security cameras.
Suddenly, the crystal-clear, booming voices of Julian and Eleanor blasted from hidden speakers in the ceiling, the walls, and the foyer, echoing through the massive estate at deafening volume.
“If she loses the baby, the prenup remains intact… Just leave her down there until morning. We’ll say she fell.”
The color violently, instantly drained from Eleanor’s heavily Botoxed face. Her jaw dropped open, a strangled, high-pitched gasp escaping her throat. She looked around the room as if the walls themselves were accusing her.
Julian froze. His eyes bulged out of his head, staring at the phone on the table.
The audio looped. Over and over. The cold, calculating premeditation of their crime playing on a continuous broadcast.
“It’s a tragic accident.”
“Exactly. A tragedy. Now go pour me a drink.”
Eleanor began to hyperventilate. The realization that her pristine, untouchable aristocratic life was over hit her with the force of a freight train. And in that moment of absolute, cornered panic, the sociopathic loyalty she shared with her son dissolved like sugar in boiling water.
“It was his idea!” Eleanor shrieked, twisting in her chair, instantly throwing her own son to the wolves to save her skin. “Julian forced me to do it! He said if I didn’t help him get rid of the baby, he would cut off my allowance! I was terrified of him, Marcus! I was a victim of his abuse!”
“You lying bitch!” Julian roared back, his face turning a dangerous, mottled red. “You shoved her! I just poured the oil! You told me it was the only way to save my company! It was your plan!”
Marcus sat motionless, watching the toxic, narcissistic alliance violently implode in front of his eyes. They were rats trapped in a burning cage, biting each other’s throats to survive for one more second.
He reached over and paused the audio.
Marcus stood up. He walked over to Julian’s chair. With a casual, effortless kick, he struck the wooden leg of the chair.
Julian went crashing backward onto the hardwood floor, the heavy chair landing on top of him. He yelped in pain, struggling helplessly on his back like an overturned turtle.
“You thought you were an apex predator because you could push a pregnant woman down the stairs in the dark,” Marcus said, looking down at the weeping, pathetic CEO. “You thought your money and your gated community made you a god. But you forgot one fundamental detail, Julian.”
Julian looked up, tears of sheer terror streaming down his face. “What?”
“You forgot who her father is.”
At that exact moment, the heavy, shattered front doors of the mansion were kicked open entirely.
It wasn’t the local police department. Marcus knew the local chief played golf with Julian. He hadn’t called them.
Flooding into the foyer were a dozen federal agents wearing tactical gear, helmets, and Kevlar vests emblazoned with ‘FBI’. Marcus had bypassed local jurisdiction entirely, utilizing his high-level contacts within the Department of Justice to classify the incident as a federal conspiracy to commit murder across state financial lines, given the prenup implications.
The lead FBI Special Agent, a woman with cold eyes and a drawn sidearm, marched into the dining room. She looked at Marcus, giving him a brief, respectful nod, before turning her weapon toward the two bound figures.
“Julian Vance and Eleanor Vance,” the agent announced, her voice booming over the chaos of agents securing the house. “You are both under arrest for Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Federal Wire Fraud in relation to your financial assets.”
Julian sobbed uncontrollably as two agents hauled him and his chair upright, cutting the zip-ties only to violently replace them with heavy steel handcuffs.
“Wait! Wait!” Julian begged, looking frantically at Marcus as the agents read him his Miranda rights. “Marcus, please! Don’t let them take my company! I built that firm! I’ll give Chloe everything! Just let me keep my business!”
Marcus reached into his tactical vest and pulled out a folded legal document.
“You don’t own a company anymore, Julian,” Marcus said smoothly, dropping the paper onto Julian’s lap. “While you were tied to that chair, I initiated a hostile takeover. My holding firm, Aegis Capital, just bought out your two primary investors. You are officially ousted as CEO. Your shares are being seized to cover the civil damages of the impending lawsuit.”
Julian stared at the paper, his mind shattering completely. “No… no…”
“You aren’t just going to prison,” Marcus whispered. “You are going to prison completely, absolutely destitute.”
As the FBI dragged a sobbing, shrieking Julian and a wailing Eleanor out the front door, their desperate cries echoing into the cold night, Marcus didn’t smile. He didn’t feel a surge of vindictive joy. He felt the cold, necessary satisfaction of a soldier who had neutralized a threat.
He turned his back on the empty house, stepped out into the freezing autumn air, and got back into his armored SUV.
It was time to go see his family.
CHAPTER 5: THE ASHES OF ARROGANCE
At 2 a.m., my pregnant daughter texted me: “They locked me in the basement as a Halloween prank.” I stormed past five armed guards and kicked open the iron door. She lay bleeding on the concrete, whispering, “Save my baby,” before losing consciousness. I pulled out my satellite phone. “Code Red. Send the trauma team. And mobilize the strike team.”
